One system, two jobs
Softener, filtration, purification: are they different things?
People search for all three and assume they are three products. In our case they are one. The system uses ion exchange to pull out hardness, which is what a softener does, and a multi stage media that reduces chlorine, chloramines and turbidity, which is what a filter does. Both happen in the same tank.
We call it a whole house purification system because that is the honest umbrella for a unit doing both jobs. If someone tells you that you need to choose between a softener and a filter for your city water, ask them why.
Hardness
Calcium and magnesium, the minerals behind scale, chalky film and stiff laundry. Removed by ion exchange, which is why capacity is measured in grains.
Chlorine and chloramines
The disinfectants your utility adds to keep the water safe on the way to your house. They do their job in the pipes, and the multi stage media reduces them at your door.

In Osceola County, which covers Kissimmee, the USGS measured hardness between 121 and 180 mg/L in the upper Floridan aquifer. The reason is geology, not a treatment failure. Central Florida sits on limestone, the aquifer runs through it, and the water picks up calcium and magnesium on the way up. It arrives at the plant already hard.
Worth saying plainly: hardness varies by neighborhood and by the age of your plumbing, and plenty of people in Orlando go years without noticing a problem. If you are not fighting buildup, you do not have a problem to solve. This page is for the people who are.

Do you also need reverse osmosis?
These are two different jobs, and it is worth being clear about which one you are buying. The whole house system treats the water running through your house: the showers, the laundry, the water heater, the fixtures.
Reverse osmosis is a separate unit under the kitchen sink that treats the water you drink and cook with. The whole house system does not replace it, and it is not a drinking water filter. Anyone who tells you one system does everything is skipping a step.
Most homes here go one of two ways: the whole house system on its own, or the whole house system plus reverse osmosis at the kitchen tap. Your water test tells us which one makes sense for your house.
